Don your headbands and get some spinning bird kick practice in, as Street Fighter V has a beta inbound and it’s set to be the biggest in the history of the franchise. Capcom is looking for fan feedback as it tweaks and fine-tunes the brawler into shape, and it’s letting everyone who pre-orders the game in on the action.
Well, it’s been confirmed that this is true for USA-based pre-orderers, but we’ll have to wait and see how timings and access criteria will be organised for us European folk. Grumble, grumble.
Alongside this beta-flavoured announcement comes news of returning character Charlie Nash, the originator of the infamous Sonic Boom technique and a fan favourite long thought dead. The former US air Force lieutenant was BFFs with hammerhead-hairstyler Guile, and was first mentioned back in SFII: The World Warrior. He appeared in playable form in the alpha series, and at the end of alpha III it was his ‘death’ at the hands of M Bison that sparked Guile’s hunt for revenge in the chronologically subsequent Street Fighter II series. Ok, you try to make sense of the SF timeline.
Nash And Grab
Of course, Chaz isn’t actually dead, though judging by the Frankenstein’s monster-like seams which cover his body in SFV, he’s gone through the wringer somewhat. Capcom teasingly imply that his motives for getting fisty this time around might be a little nefarious. “What is Nash’s goal in SFV?” the big C asks. “You will have to wait and see.”
We do know that he’ll boast a few new tricks up his sleeveless vest-jacket. In his souped-up beatdown repertoire is a high-arcing jump-kick that knocks opponents back and skyward. Some of his signature moves return, including the neon boomerang that’s clearly just a hipster hadouken. For those unfamiliar with the blond-haired bruiser, he’s basically to Guile what Ken is to Ryu: an alternative with a few tricks of his own to set him apart. Whether that’ll still be the case in his new form? as Capcom says, we’ll have to wait and see…
